Understanding SGCC Steel Sheets and Aluminum-Zinc Coated Plates

What is SGCC Clear Plate Made Of?

SGCC clear plate is made from hot-dip steel sheet.

This process applies a protective zinc coating to steel sheets or iron to prevent rust. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, where parts are immersed in a bath of molten zinc. This creates a strong zinc-iron alloy layer. For automotive body shells, additional decorative coatings are applied, while electroplating uses thinner coatings.

Hot-dip galvanizing generally does not reduce the strength of the steel, except for high-strength steels (greater than 1100 MPa), where hydrogen embrittlement can become a concern. This can affect the manufacture of highly stressed products, like wire ropes.

The protection provided by hot-dip galvanizing is not sufficient for products exposed to corrosive substances like acid rain. In such cases, more expensive materials, such as stainless steel, are preferred. Some nails are also galvanized, but electroplating is often used in outdoor applications. It is cheaper than hot-dip galvanizing and maintains a good appearance when new.

Why is SGCC Material Sometimes Called Aluminum-Zinc Plate?

SGCC refers to a steel sheet coated with zinc to prevent corrosion and improve adhesion. On the other hand, aluminized sheet is made by applying an aluminum-zinc alloy coating (55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon) to the steel sheet. This alloy coating is solidified at a high temperature of 600°C, creating a dense, four-element structure (aluminum, iron, silicon, and zinc).

Although the processes and effects are similar, and the materials are comparable, some people may refer to SGCC material as an aluminum-zinc plate due to the similarity in coating. However, it’s important to note that SGCC is primarily known for its zinc coating, while aluminized sheets feature a different alloy composition. As an aluminized supplier, we provide high-quality aluminized sheets with superior corrosion resistance and durability.
