How to Identify Aluminum Alloy vs. Pure Aluminum

How to Identify Aluminum Alloy and Pure Aluminum

Aluminum alloy and pure aluminum can be distinguished through several methods, including testing for hardness, composition, and other properties. Here’s how to identify them:

  1. Hardness Test
Scratch both materials with a knife. Pure aluminum, being soft, will show noticeable scratches, whereas aluminum alloy, due to its heat treatment, is harder and more durable. This test can help identify the type of metal, especially when dealing with aluminized sheets.

  2. Composition Detection
Instruments like spectroscopy, SEM, or fluorescence can be used to analyze the composition. Aluminum alloys contain elements like iron, copper, manganese, and magnesium. In contrast, pure aluminum consists only of aluminum. For aluminized suppliers, the composition analysis helps determine if the material is purely aluminum or alloyed for additional strength.

  3. Quenching Treatment
After heating, observe the surface color. If the material turns gray or black, it is likely an aluminum alloy, due to the presence of copper (Cu). This color change is especially evident in steel sheets or aluminized sheets after quenching treatments.

  4. Melting Point Measurement
Professional instruments can be used to measure melting points. Pure aluminum has a higher melting point than aluminum alloy. The addition of foreign elements in the alloy reduces its melting point. This property is key when selecting the right material for aluminized sheet applications.

  5. Density Test
Pure aluminum has a density of 2.7 g/cm³, while aluminum alloys vary in density depending on their composition. This difference is critical when purchasing aluminum materials, such as steel sheets or aluminized sheets, to meet specific structural requirements.

These methods help aluminized suppliers and manufacturers distinguish between aluminum alloy and pure aluminum, ensuring the right material is selected for the job.
